Montsec is a 40km mountain range, partly in Aragon and partly in
Catalonia. The rivers of Noguera have carved out and shaped the
spectacular gorges, which divide the mountain range into three sections.
The area is very much into tourism, being such a beautiful area, and
the Consorci del Montsec has been set up by local areas to publicise the
area. There is an astronomic observatory and also a universe
observatory in the area. The region boasts many historic castles,
monuments and churches. The museum is called the Isona Museum, housing
many ancient artefacts from the area. |

There are many festivals and traditions which reflect the folklre of the
area. In February, the fira del Ranxo is held in Ponts, which is a
free lunch for residents and visitors, cooked in huge Cauldrons. In
August is the Fira del Melon (Melon Fair) which also includes local
cheeses and wine, and in October in Isona is the Fira del Bolet
(Mushroom Fair). There is also a partridge fair where live birds are
paraded and sold. There are also traditional dance festivals, a bell
ringing festival, a river running competition and a flag-bearing day, to
name but a few. |
